SWP in India: the basics
In India, an SWP is set up on a mutual fund folio. You choose a scheme, an amount, a date and a frequency, and the fund house redeems units and credits your bank account. SWPs are popular with retirees replacing a salary, with parents funding a child’s college years and with NRIs who want regular rupee income. This SWP calculator India page uses rupee amounts and Indian number grouping throughout.
How SWP withdrawals are taxed in India
Each SWP payment redeems units, and only the gain on those units is taxed — the part that is your own capital coming back is not. Units are redeemed first-in, first-out. Under the rules in force from 23 July 2024:
- Equity-oriented funds: units held over 12 months — long-term capital gains taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh of such gains a year; units held 12 months or less — short-term gains taxed at 20%.
- Debt funds bought on or after 1 April 2023: gains are added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, however long you hold them.
Tax rules change with Union Budgets, so check the current rules or ask a tax adviser before planning withdrawals.
Inflation in India
The Reserve Bank of India targets consumer price inflation of 4%, within a band of 2% to 6%. Over long periods, many planners assume 5–6% for household expenses — and more for school fees and healthcare. At 6%, ₹10,000 a month today needs to become about ₹18,000 in ten years to buy the same things:
| After | ₹10,000 is worth (6% inflation) | Needed to buy today’s ₹10,000 |
|---|---|---|
| 5 years | ₹7,473 | ₹13,382 |
| 10 years | ₹5,584 | ₹17,908 |
| 15 years | ₹4,173 | ₹23,966 |
| 20 years | ₹3,118 | ₹32,071 |
| 25 years | ₹2,330 | ₹42,919 |
| 30 years | ₹1,741 | ₹57,435 |
SWP vs FD interest and annuities
- Fixed deposit interest is taxed in full at your slab rate every year. In an SWP only the gain part of each withdrawal is taxed, and only when you redeem.
- Annuities pay a guaranteed income for life, but the rate is fixed and your capital is usually locked in.
- An SWP stays flexible — you can change or stop it — but income is not guaranteed and depends on fund returns.
